Stafford County Lions Club - District 24A

Club History

The Stafford County Lions Club was chartered on April 4, 1952, by The International Association of Lions Clubs and was sponsored by the Fredericksburg Lions Club. The first charter installation of officers occurred on May 7, 1952 with District Governor Earnest Cooke installing the officers.

During the past 50 years, the club has provided valuable sight and hearing services to citizens of the county who could not afford them. Throughout the years, this club has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for eyeglasses, eye exams, hearing aides and hearing exams for needy adults and children so they might lead a better life. Additionally, the club has played a key role in sponsoring area residents for Leader Dogs so qualified blind residents might improve their quality of life and become more productive citizens. The club also has an ongoing eyeglass-recycling program. The purpose of the program is to collect eyeglasses for people in underdeveloped countries so they might again enjoy the gift of sight. Imagine the joy a pair of used eyeglasses can bring to someone who can now read a newspaper for the first time in years.

Annually, the club sponsors the District 24-A Sight and Hearing Screening Van so the citizens of Stafford can receive free eye and hearing screenings. Throughout the years, hundreds of Stafford citizens have been screened. There is no telling how many have their eyesight today as a result of these screenings. The Club also has an extensive educational program to make people aware of the dangers of preventable blindness such as glaucoma and diabetic eye disease.

The Club continues to sponsor the Bland Memorial Music Contest, conducts a peace poster contest for middle school students and awards about $4,000 worth of scholarships to high school seniors in the county. In addition, the group sponsors a Leo Club--the high school equivalent of a Lions club--at Colonial Forge High School.

The Lions also have partnerships with the Stafford chapter of the NAACP to sponsor health fairs and have joined with other clubs in the district to help “Habitat for Humanity” build houses in Fairfax. The club was recently involved with providing a Ferry Farm Elementary School student with a Braille 'n' Speak computer to aid his education.

Other projects recently completed include the development of the Stafford County Lions internet web-site which will allow members and non-members alike to learn more about our club and the functions that we perform. This web-site will provide access to other Lions sites including the International Lions homepage. Additionally, the club formed a choral group named: “Voices of the Pride”. The choral group performed its first concert at the club’s Christmas party on December 7, 2001. The choral group performed a number of Christmas songs to get everyone into the holiday spirit and to share in the joy of singing. It is the club’s hope to eventually expand the membership of the “Voices of the Pride” choral group to other Clubs in our region.

As you can see, the club is marked by many significant contributions and countless acts of kindness in servicing the community over the past 50 years. The club is proud of its rich history and will continue to carry-on this tradition into the future.
